National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a time-honored celebration and moment for education at New Hampton School, honoring the power of female athletes and the spirit of competition, leadership, and mentorship. Thanks to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and community members, what started as a single day of recognition has blossomed into a multi-day celebration, thoughtfully organized by Eileen Williams P’22. Here’s a look at this year’s inspiring #NGWSD festivities.
Strength in Sharing
At school meeting on Monday, February 3, Eli ’27 shared her personal journey of being a goalie on a boy’s hockey team for most of her childhood. Through this experience she felt that it made her stronger, and that, while it was difficult, it helped her to trust her abilities in the face of adversity. “It taught me to push through hard moments and gain confidence. Looking back I know all those hard moments made me who I am today—someone who isn’t afraid to face challenges no matter who is around.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of the greatest rewards of being an athlete is the opportunity to give back and inspire the next generation. This year, New Hampton School welcomed local elementary school girls for a hockey clinic led by our student-athletes. These young players had the chance to sharpen their skills, build confidence, and connect with mentors who share their passion for sports. Whether it was mastering a skating drill, or simply experiencing the joy of being part of a team, the energy and excitement were contagious. Reflecting on the event, Williams shared, “Watching our student-athletes take on leadership roles and inspire the next generation of female athletes is what this day is all about.”
Wisdom from the Fields, Rinks, and Courts
Following an action-packed day of games, our student-athletes gathered for an inspiring alumnae panel discussion featuring accomplished former Huskies who have excelled at the collegiate level. This year, we welcomed Lucie Legro ’23, Lucy Palmer ’23, Izzy Prentiss ’24, and Kaelin Fitzpatrick ’24 to share their journeys in hockey, basketball, and soccer. From navigating college recruitment to balancing academics and athletics, these alumnae offered invaluable insights, encouragement, and advice. Williams notes, “I am always impressed with our panelists. They are thoughtful and articulate while sharing relatable personal experiences with our current students. Hearing success stories from recent alumnae inspires our players to pursue their own goals and dreams.” The opportunity to hear firsthand from those who have walked the same halls—and skated the same rinks, fields, and courts—is an impactful moment for our young student-athletes.
A Sea of Pink and School Spirit
The energy on campus reached its peak on Wednesday, February 12, with our annual Pink Out Theme—a game day dedicated to supporting our female athletes and celebrating the power of women in sports. Decked out in pink, students, faculty, and fans packed the stands to cheer on our girls’ hockey and basketball teams in their home matchups. With a vibrant atmosphere featuring photo ops, half-time competitions, and custom jersey posters, the day was filled with excitement and camaraderie. The support from the stands was a testament to the tight-knit and spirited community that defines New Hampton School athletics.
Honoring a National Tradition
NGWSD is recognized nationwide by schools, colleges, and professional sports organizations, all working together to advocate for gender equity in athletics. Organized nationally by the Women’s Sports Foundation, the event shines a light on the achievements of female athletes and the ongoing fight for equal opportunities in sports. At New Hampton School, we are proud to be part of this movement and grateful to all the students, coaches, and supporters who continue to champion women’s athletics every day.
Here’s to another year of celebrating strength, resilience, and the incredible impact of girls and women in sports! #NGWSD
