With Baptist sponsorship, New Hampton Academy became New Hampton Academical and Theological Institution, educating students to become ministers and missionaries.
Character development has always been central to the New Hampton curriculum. In 1825 the school adopted the name The New Hampton Academical and Theological Institution to reflect the patronage of the New England Freewill Baptists and the curriculum’s emphasis on the spiritual aspects of character development.
