Another school year has begun, and there is a special feeling in Husky Nation, thanks to the spirited work of our student leaders. It is not every year that a school theme truly shapes behavior; however, Be the Change has resonated in meaningful ways with our leaders and, through orientation, has permeated the rest of the student body—laying the foundation for a healthy school year.
Guideposts for the new year
Advisor and house groups have discussed what they will do, both as a group and as individuals, to live our theme. From maintaining a positive mindset, to being a good friend, caring for our campus, and practicing inclusivity and respect, we are embracing both the big and little things that matter.
In the many meetings and events that mark the start of a year, we have been intentional about connecting institutional change—whether in systems, personnel, or operations—with our theme. This helps foster a positive mindset around routines that may be new and, at times, less comfortable, but are intended to make our work more effective. Focusing on the why and the outcomes we aim to achieve will be a guiding goal for this year, as we seek to simplify what might otherwise feel difficult.
Reflecting on legacies
During our Convocation ceremony, I spoke about change and how the collection of one’s actions becomes their legacy. Entering my final year, I am increasingly mindful of legacy and the responsibility I feel to ensure that, like my predecessors, I leave New Hampton in an even better place. In many ways, this is made easier by the reflective and collaborative spirit of our community, always seeking new ways to strengthen our programs and deepen our impact on students. At the same time, the work we do is complex and far-reaching, which highlights the importance of thoughtful planning and caring for our tremendous employees—so that they can sustain themselves over the year and enjoy the deeply rewarding lifestyle our profession offers.
The path ahead
The first of the “lasts” has begun for Eileen and me. Perhaps it struck us most at our formal brunch following Convocation. The wonderful students at our table reminded us why we do this work. They were brimming with optimism and hope, eager to dive into their activities and friendships to make this a memorable year. It was also a poignant reminder of what we will miss most—meeting new people from all over the world and watching them grow through the things they love.
I hope you will follow our journey this year as we work to make it memorable for all that we achieve together!
