Celebrating the holiday season at New Hampton School is a cherished tradition that brings warmth and joy to our community, even as the days grow colder. Although classes are not in session for holidays like Thanksgiving, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s, our festive celebrations begin early in November, fostering a sense of home and unity among our students, faculty, and staff.
One of our new favorite seasonal events is “Thanksgiving Around the World,” a weeklong event where we honor our international students and faculty who represent 32 countries. Each evening gathering brings a vibrant spread of foods, games, and crafts, allowing everyone to experience a variety of global traditions. The final night includes a special evening performance in McEvoy Theater where students share their cultures and talents through music, dance, and other performances, making it an unforgettable celebration.
When students return from Thanksgiving break, the campus transforms into a winter wonderland. The garlands, twinkling white lights, and red bows drape upon exteriors, and the student lounge becomes transformed into a cozy hub of holiday cheer, featuring a menorah, Christmas tree, and winter-themed decorations. This new look brings an added sparkle to the campus, creating a welcoming atmosphere that embodies the season’s spirit.
December brings another beloved tradition: our community meeting’s Winter Music Showcase. Students from our Contemporary Performance Lab present a concert that showcases the incredible talent within our community. This is followed by an evening at Smith House, the Head of School’s residence, where students gather to sing songs, enjoy treats by the fireplace, and savor an evening of warmth and camaraderie before exam week.
Exam week might seem like it would pause the holiday excitement, but thanks to our Parents Association’s annual exam bake, the holiday spirit endures. Parents from our community prepare an incredible spread of savory and sweet treats for students, boosting morale with each bite. This thoughtful event provides a much-needed moment of comfort and joy before students head into winter break.
When students go home, the joy of the season continues to echo on social media, where well wishes and photos remind everyone of the friendships made here. Sometimes, they’ll even see friends lit by the glow of New Year’s sparklers—a symbol of the bright year that awaits. The holiday season at New Hampton School is a reminder that home is not just a place; it’s the people who make the season feel special.
