International Night Tradition Transforms Into International Week

International Night is a beloved tradition by domestic and international students alike. This day-long spring event encourages members of our international community to go behind kitchen lines to prepare their favorite dishes from their home countries. Some wear traditional dress or play native music which adds to the experience as members of Husky Nation taste the culinary creations from around the globe. In the evening, authentic poems, music, and dance performances are shared in McEvoy Theater. It’s a great way to end the day and celebrate as a community! This year, as with many of our favorite traditions, International Night had to be adapted in a way that would reduce crowds but still allow some of the many countries represented within our community to be recognized on campus.

A Week of Celebration

The traditional International Night experience transformed into International Week with the help of our international student ambassadors and Mrs. Estridge. Themed lunches featured many student-requested items as the dining hall staff put their practiced hands to work creating tasty lunch dishes from nations near and far. They worked tirelessly for an international menu that included: Monday: India and China, Tuesday: Malaysia and Vietnam, Wednesday: Jamaica and Cuba, Thursday: French and Spanish, and Friday: Germany and Poland. There were also daily games and international trivia presented to the community.

A Message of Love

Also presented during this week was a surprise video created by our remote students in China. Unbeknownst to most of the community, these students worked together on the secret video during Project Week. Two of the students began their time at New Hampton during the pandemic this past fall. In the making of this video, some of the students were able to meet up to film some of the video segments and get to know each other. It was a great surprise and a testament to the reach of Husky Nation and the power of our community. Thank you to Harry, Max, Cece, Kristy, Ke, and Coco for pulling together this amazing message to share with your school. We can’t wait to see you again in person!

The flag parade is a traditional part of the International Night experience when hosted in McEvoy Theater, as shown above from a prior year.
