This fall’s Smith-Moore Service Learning Day was truly one to remember. Twice each year, we come together as a school community to dedicate time to service learning. But this time, we did things a little differently, following the success of last year’s all-school collaboration with Make-A-Wish. Each grade was given a specific plan for the day, and for our seniors, the focus was clear and meaningful: an unforgettable day spent with 60 middle schoolers from Special Olympics New Hampshire.

From the moment the day began, you could feel the excitement in the air. As the seniors greeted their middle school partners, the energy was high, and the icebreakers helped everyone get to know one another. Name games and quick introductions paved the way for what would become a day filled with connection, fun, and teamwork.

The workshops and activities lined up for the day allowed the seniors to step into leadership roles, guiding the middle schoolers through a variety of experiences. From the fast-paced energy of pickleball and soccer to the creative joy of painting, and from the rhythm of karaoke to the friendly competition of corn hole and basketball, there was something for everyone. The floor hockey games and yoga sessions added a balance of challenge and calm, ensuring every participant had the chance to shine in their own way.

The seniors didn’t just teach and lead—they formed connections. Throughout the day, laughter echoed across the campus as students worked together, celebrated each other’s successes, and encouraged one another during the activities. Sharing lunch together was a highlight, offering a chance for everyone to bond even further before heading into the final portion of the day.

As the event drew to a close, everyone gathered in our outdoor amphitheater for a heartfelt closing ceremony. It was a moment to reflect on the day’s shared experiences and celebrate the growth, learning, and friendships that had formed. Watching the seniors and middle schoolers come together so seamlessly was a powerful reminder of the impact of service learning—one that we will carry with us into future events.

Smith-Moore Service Learning Day has always been about giving back and growing as a community. This year’s collaboration with Special Olympics New Hampshire added a new level of depth and meaning to that mission, and we are already looking forward to the next opportunity.
