New Hampton School is excited to announce that English faculty member, coach, advisor, and house parent Jake Moore is the featured speaker for the 204th Convocation. With few exceptions, it is a modern tradition at New Hampton School that the faculty member honored with the O’Connor Excellence in Teaching prize at the conclusion of the preceding academic year receives the distinction of speaking during Convocation. Their voice helps lend tone and structure for the year ahead in conjunction with words from our Head of School and the community elected all-school theme.
The O’Connor Excellence in Teaching Prize recognizes a faculty member selected as a strong contributor by demonstrating such attributes as; setting the highest standard for his or her students while not abandoning them to their own resources; nurturing students inside and outside the classroom; and demonstrating a commitment to the student, the school, and the art of teaching. Current students nominate a teacher who is caring, inspiring, and represents the best of New Hampton School.
O’Connor Distinguished Teaching
With this recent award, Mr. Moore is recognized as a role model for both our students and faculty. Described as being an educator who exemplifies what it means to be a caring, supportive, and inspiring teacher, he demands the best of his students. Alumna and former Student Body Co-President Taylor Settles ’24 had the honor of speaking about Moore upon granting the O’Connor recognition.
This teacher has truly made a difference in the lives of his students. Countless students have mentioned that he is their favorite teacher, and it’s no surprise why. He creates a welcoming and inclusive environment in the classroom where everyone feels valued and respected.
Not only is he knowledgeable and able to engage his students through thoughtful discussions, but he also goes above and beyond to ensure that each student is given the opportunity to succeed. […] His patience, listening skills, and ability to help students think in new ways have made him a trusted mentor and role model to many. When a student is struggling, he works with them to develop a success plan because he wants the best for all his students.
This teacher had a large impact on me in the three years that I have known him. He makes learning interesting and engaging and, in the two years I had him, I was excited to come to class every single day. He goes out of his way to make his students feel heard and seen, and it is palpable that he cares about all his students and sees them as real people instead of just treating them as any other student. Although he can be quiet, his humor in class brings light to our learning.
We look forward to hearing Mr. Moore’s remarks during Convocation on Sunday, September 1, at 4:15 pm.
