A Sense of Place: Monhegan Island will be on display in New Hampton School’s Galletly Gallery from Monday, August 27 – Saturday, October 11, 2024. The public is cordially invited to a reception for the artists on October 11, 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

In this exhibit, 21 participants of The Monhegan Retreat share their process and finished work created ‘on island’ or inspired by the island. The Monhegan Retreat is a week-long artist retreat on Monhegan Island, Maine. The mission of the Monhegan Retreat is to create a residency-style experience where artists can focus on their creative work, collaborate with other contemporary artists, and support the community of Monhegan Island.

Exploring Monhegan Island

A Sense of Place: Monhegan Island, will exude the artists’ great energy and varied experience. Visual artist Kathi Smith, founder of the Monhegan Retreat, curated this collection of works in the Galletly Gallery. Smith states, “It’s my great pleasure to curate a group exhibition of artists and educators from across the country who have gathered together on Monhegan Island, Maine, over the last eight years. The island hosts a rich history of artists and makers and a landscape to inspire all. This exhibition includes finished pieces as well as works in process. By sharing our varied personal and artistic responses to this island, we hope to share a ‘sense of place’ of Monhegan. The New Hampton Community will have the opportunity to see many visions, media, and stylistic approaches in rendering the rocky terrain of an island that sits 10 miles out to sea.”

Amy Wilson, Monhegan Retreat participant and Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department at New Hampton School, reflects on her experience on the island: ‘The Monhegan Retreat is about grounding my energy in that powerful, beautiful, natural world. It is about allowing myself grace to play and to be ‘in process’. It is about inspiration from people and place, and about community.

Artists whose work is on exhibit include Krisanne Baker, Jessica Cobbett, Rachel Church, Lynn Decker, Alison C Dibble, Kristin Fitzpatrick, Janet Gill, Amy Guadagnoli, Barbara Guerrero, Ulrike Guthrie, Penny Huynen, Becca Kallem, Joël LeVasseur, Devitt Liptak, Erin Lynch, Tamara Mann, Malorie Martin, Jane Mauchly, Ana Mendoza, Kimberly Ritchie, Kathi Smith, Molly Thompson, Linda Walsh, Amy Wilson, and Wendy Wilson.
