Establishing Habits of Mind is a pillar of a New Hampton education. Each month, students, athletes, staff and faculty are highlighted as they model the Habit of Mind for the given month. In addition, students and employees are recognized for acting as role models and contributing to our community in positive ways. Congratulations to all of our September Spotlights.

Student of the Month

In the month of September, the Habit of Mind selected was Preparation. New Hampton School is proud to recognize Chihiro Tokuyama ’20 for her class preparation. Every class period she has clearly spent a significant amount of time preparing. Her notes are incredibly organized and she has questions ready to ask. She listens to everything the teacher says and follows the directions with incredible care. Because of her desire to excel and to improve she is truly a model student.

Athletes of the Month

The September Female Athlete of the Month is a member of the Women’s Varsity Field Hockey Team. This athlete is an offensive force to be reckoned with. She has totaled 4 goals; 2 of which were scored in our home game against Tilton, 2 assists, and dozens of shots on goal since the start of our season. Her grit and scrappiness are shown every time she steps onto the field. She works hard to create all her offensive opportunities. Starting as a center attackman, she is one of the key players in our defensive press; always working tightly and tirelessly with her teammates to pressure the opponents on our offensive and defensive end of the field in efforts to regain possession and score. The New Hampton School’s September Female Athlete of the Month is awarded to Amelia Monahan ’21.

The September Male Athlete of the Month is a member of the Varsity Football Team. This athlete has been an outstanding performer on both offense and defense to lead New Hampton School to a 2-0 start. On offense, he has totaled 380 yards of rushing and 6 touchdowns over two games. In the huge comeback win against Kingswood-Oxford last weekend, he had a staggering 309 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. Defensively, he has wreaked havoc totaling 19 tackles, 1 defensive touchdown, and constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks. His outstanding contributions on the field, toughness, and game day effort are deserving of making Ky’Joun Butler ’20, New Hampton School’s September Male Athlete of the Month.

Staff of the Month

Each month, the student council members will select a staff and faculty member to be awarded a monthly certificate. Each person is selected by the student council members based on who we think represents a specific word or action. The word we chose for this first month is “passion”. It is a clear goal for this person to put a smile on our faces through the food he prepares. He dedicates his Sunday mornings to making us happier with the most amazing and personalized omelets around. He works hard in the kitchen throughout the day. For sharing his passion with our community every day and every meal, this month’s staff of the month award goes to Mr. Todd Howarth.

Faculty of the Month

When we discussed the word “passion”, as it relates to our faculty members, there were a lot of names that kept coming up. It wasn’t difficult for each of us to think of a faculty member who we felt was really passionate about teaching. After some discussion, we chose a faculty member who displays his passion for teaching with his energetic lessons. He goes to great lengths; even dressing up in character costumes to keep the lessons interesting. It is obvious that he is passionate about his subject because his lessons are memorable, he gives students different ways to learn the topics in his class, and he is dedicated to creating individual relationships with his students. For his passion for teaching and care for each student, this month’s faculty of the month award goes to Mr. Saler.
